Moon Over Madeline Island Synopsis Once in a lifetime we all hope for a friendship that will carry us well into old age. Such are the bonds between Eve and Ruby. Though a generation separates them, nothing could have prepared either one for the roller coaster adventures they’re about to be thrown into. With great hair of course. As the story opens, Eve Moss turns forty-seven, has owned a hair salon for years and is feeling…ordinary. She’s still a bit overweight, still single and finally realizing that’s just fine. Her bosom buddy is Ruby Prévost. A tiny British lady, (actual age unknown, she lies) with oodles of piss and vinegar and attitude galore. Having finally gotten over the death of her husband Ed, she’s ready to cut loose and get out of town. For good. Realizing time is marching by, they up-root their moderately moderate lives, grab the cat, pack the VW van to bursting and head north to Madeline Island. This magical place is a tiny, Norman Rockwell isle of White Pines, meandering creeks and less than a hundred permanent inhabitants. They reopen, air out and fluff up the charming old log cottage that was in Ed’s family for nearly a hundred years. While sitting on the end of the dock sharing a smoke and a glass of wine, cooking some delicious something or cozy around a crackling fire, they laugh and cry and bare their souls. This is the marrow, the very essence of my tale. Eve has spent her life helping everyone else find their way and that has been enough. But then a sudden change of events opens the door to something new and she grabs it! Ruby is the catalyst; the best friend and the key to helping Eve find herself. Once settled on the island, Eve and Ruby rub their entrepreneurial hands together and with the help of the couple next door, Howard and Johnny, they revamp the guest cottage above the old boathouse. Practically overnight, the place is whipping out snappy aprons by the arms-full and ‘Ruby’s Aprons’ is born. One of the seamstresses has a rotten, angry, wife-beating liquor-loving husband who pushes her over the edge late one stormy night. After being chased and smacked around, she can take no more and wallops him good with her Hoover vacuum. The rest of the sewing crew rushes in to salvage the situation, covering up his accidental demise, which is precisely what friends do for friends. Moon Over Madeline Island is a journey of the heart, a story of two women finding their way while finding their way. |
