Scenes from Madeline Island

An island in Lake Superior. Enchanting, magical and beautiful. Newest scenes below.

Madeline Island in October
A stream on the island flowing into Lake Superior

A Leafy Driveway
Similar to Eve & Ruby's driveway from their cottage to the main road

Jay holding the original Sun Sign on Madeline Island

Sun Sign
It's common in Wisconsin  to have a sign marking the entrance to your property.
This is the original sign Jay spotted on Madeline Island that was the inspiration for the 'Eve and Ruby's' sign

Greenwood Cemetery
Majestic, towering White Pines and fall color

Wonderful Names and Inscriptions
Names and sentiments that may crop up in book II. This one reads;

                 Andrew Hickenlooper Blackmore
Investment banker for God, gumption & lagnaippe

There Really Are Ducks!
Designed as an amphibious vehicle for WWII duty, many are now doing tour service in Wisconsin resorts

Windsled
During the summer you take a ferry from the island to the mainland town of Bayfield. In the winter, Lake Superior freezes and you drive across. However there are a few weeks in spring and fall when the ice is too thin, so the locals use this unique form of transportation–a fan driven Windsled.

Tom's Burned Down Cafe
It's just too funny. Tom's Cafe did indeed burn down at one time but the witty signs survived. Just in case you can't read these, they say, "15 speed drink limit when children are present" and "Earth First!, we'll strip mine the other planets later."  Wicked.

Greunke's in Bayfield
Mary, one of Jay's best friends and, the inspiration behind the yellow sweater in "Back to Madeline Island" in front of Greunke's in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The place for whitefish liver dinners when you're in town.

Andy's IGA Market in Bayfield, Wisconsin
The snack isle to be specific. This is the exact spot that Eve and Ruby bumped into Lilly in the first book of the series, "Moon Over Madeline Island."

Madeline Island Daffodils
What a wonderful April display. Being in a huge inland ocean gives Madeline Island a somewhat more temperate climate than other areas in Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Jay later learned that the owner of this wonderful garden had actually read his books. Thank you!

Arriving on Madeline Island
Shot of Jay just about to arrive at the town of La Pointe on Madeline Island. The ferry ride takes about 25 minutes from Bayfield, Wisconsin.
